PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Safety Automation Engineer is key to the leadership and execution of delivering outcomes that are aligned with the Roofing and Asphalt portfolio. The Safety Automation Engineer is responsible for assessing the current state of our processes and creating a roadmap for safe touchless operations driven by automation solutions. Common duties will be leading the definition of new application requirements & updating existing applications based on functional requirements; providing cost/benefit tradeoff analysis to leadership; prototyping, designing, integrating, and testing robotic and automation systems; deploying automation systems to the manufacturing floor and assuring effective training for operations and maintenance. The Safety Automation Engineer will work with the Capital Delivery project engineers for all aspects of capital projects (start to finish) and is accountable to ensure the business outcomes of the projects are realized and sustainable. A successful Safety Automation Engineer provides leadership through efficient management of resources, synchronization of project management concepts and effective communication to all stake holders are central accountabilities to this role.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Depth:

Performing machine guarding quantitative risk assessments for new and existing machinery.

Overseeing EHS technical issues for R&A while serving as the technical expert for all Design Safety Reviews.

Managing annual capital EHS portfolio budget.

Providing critical leadership, technical expertise, and support of EHS process improvements, regulatory compliance, EHS capital projects and deployment of various EHS initiatives and training.

Focusing on deployment of regional and site level strategies and EHS risk reduction projects that will follow OC and regulatory standards, prevent life altering injuries, protect the environment, support our March to Zero injury journey as well as our sustainability objectives that are consistent with the OC Safety and Sustainability Stands.

Primary expert on automation systems and concepts which will improve production methods, equipment performance, facility layout and quality of product.

(TPM) Delivering solutions that are at Step 3 of Autonomous Maintenance.

Focus will be placed on partnering with operations/technical leaders to understand and solve business needs by integrating off-the-shelf solutions.

Leveraging partnerships with best-in-industry vendors to drive innovation through emerging technologies.

Project Leadership - Lead R&A touchless operations initiatives, ensuring the successful delivery of the project outcomes:

Leading and engaging plant leadership teams and engineers to identify and translate business needs into clear project and system specifications.

Applying project management expertise and other best practices/tools to define, execute, and fully own project plans from end-to-end.

Developing and forecasting project plans and project budget to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.

Communication - collaborating with all Leaders, guaranteeing clear and consistent communications to all project stakeholders.

Change Leadership - Managing the transition to ensure adoption of change, project benefits are achieved, and project outcomes are sustainable.

Adhering to the Project Management processes and actively prepares for / participates in all reviews and stage gate deliverables.

Understanding and following all AM and corporate standards.

This role has accountability for the scope, budget, resources, assumptions, communication, change management, training, testing, deployment, controls, and user acceptance for the project.

Leading and Developing Talent - Builds solid performing project teams and works with all Leaders to develop and engage team members according to growth plans:

Leading and engaging single or cross-functional project teams, which are accountable for design, development, and implementation of defined solutions.

Accountable for the development and alignment of all project roles and responsibilities. Ensuring the roles and responsibilities are articulated to each team member, modified as required, and accomplished throughout the project.

Discussing growth and development plans with the appropriate Leaders to ensure project roles / accountabilities support the resource growth plans.

Recommending and supporting project-specific mentoring relationships for growth areas on the project and helps to secure the commitment of the mentor / expert.

Providing clear feedback - both routine feedback (ad hoc discussions based on project activities) and formal feedback (reviews at key phases of the project or related to growth and development plans).

Manage Relationships with Internal & External Partners - Builds and grows external partners' capacity to augment achievement of business outcomes and provide innovative solutions to drive step change:

Developing upfront communication of corporate vision, objectives and constraints.

Setting expectations of service and performance levels.

Streamlining organizational goals to be supporting and complimentary in nature.

Exploring full potential of partners capabilities and skill sets and links partner ability to align with desired business outcome.

Planning and facilitating a seamless on-boarding plan for team members including project requirements, standards, testing procedures, templates, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Science degree and 5-10 years in a manufacturing environment with demonstrated technical and leadership skills.

Master's degree preferred.

Must have very broad background including experience with automation such as PLCs/HMI, drives, robots, motion controls as well as technical project management.

Travel: 30 - 45%.

EXPERIENCE:

Project Leadership - previous execution of small to large scale projects, possibly including initiatives with global reach, technology, processes, cross-functional teams and partner team members, PMI certification preferred.

Partner Relationships - experience with cross-functional teams that include third party expertise. Aptitude to build strategic and execution-focused plans and alliances with partner leadership.

Project Management Science / Capability - training and application of industry best practice processes and tools regarding the effective management of projects, including, but not limited to, scope, schedule, cost, risk, resource, and issue management.

Strong Communications - effective planning and execution of communications for stakeholders, both written and verbal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

This position should have the knowledge and ability to design, create, develop, and manage systems, such as factory and process automation, to make the systems work by themselves or require minimum human interaction.

Change agent: Effectively leads change, action and results.

Business Acumen - experience with business operations; aptitude / desire to grow in the knowledge of the Owens Corning business; conveyance of business acumen to project team members.
