About the Job

Summary of Position: Under supervision, this individual will be responsible for conducting various experiments and data analysis to measure cellular senescence in the brain from different mouse models of neurodegeneration and accelerated aging, including models of Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease. While this individual is expected to have basic research laboratory skills, technique-centric training will be provided to analyze senescence, including isolation of RNA/DNA, qPCR, western blotting, RNAScope, ELISA, and establishing primary neuronal cultures from mouse brains. This individual is also expected to support the research of other aging projects in the lab under the supervisor's direction. Continuing self-motivated education in aging research is expected.

Essential and Other Duties:
70% Molecular Biology: (essential) Prepare tissue lysates, isolate DNA, RNA, and protein, quantitate nucleic acids and protein levels, perform qRT-PCR, western blotting, and ELISA (as warranted by experimental design), followed by data analysis. Perform In-situ hybridization (RNAscope) on tissue sections and image slides to detect fluorescent readouts of senescence.
10% Animal experiments (secondary) Assist with the dissection and collection of animal tissues to ensure sample viability for molecular biology experiments.
10% Data analysis (essential) Collate molecular data, management, analysis, and data preparation in a form suitable for presentation and publication.
10% Logistics and administrative (essential) Searching for samples in our electronic LIMS, sample retrieval, and checkout; picking up and distributing samples to necessary research cores and collaborators; inventory of research supplies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: BS/BA degree in a biomedical discipline, or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years.
Must have strong data management and problem-solving skills, an ability to multitask, and to work with a team and independently.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants should be interested in health sciences and working in a fast-paced research environment.

About the Department

iBAM is part of the growing Geroscience movement that aims to attack the numerous debilitating diseases associated with old age through slowing or reversing the aging process itself. iBAM faculty study aging biology with the goal of developing drugs to target those processes. Our goal is to extend the period of time that we remain healthy, independent, and able to enjoy a high quality of life!
Lab Research Summary: Using several mouse models, our group investigates the role of cellular senescence (resulting from deficient DNA repair mechanisms) in normal aging and in various disease settings. As an aging research laboratory, our broad goal is to improve the health of our aging human population by decreasing disease burden. The hiree will join a team of scientists in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biophysics and the Institute on the Biology of Aging and Metabolism at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. The position offers exceptional training in molecular biology, aging, neurodegeneration, and drug pre-clinical testing.
