Position is available to employees of the Associated C.O.L.T. Staff of the University of Maine from 05/09/2024 through 05/15/2024 and open to external applicants thereafter.
The Community Education Assistant CL2 in 4-H with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in the Kennebec County office supports 4-H clubs, groups, and activities in Kennebec County. Duties include recruiting new youth and volunteers, helping to train 4-H volunteers and support them in carrying out the educational mission of the 4-H program, coordinating volunteer efforts, delivering educational programs using established curriculum, and organizing county 4-H events. This position is part-time, one-year fixed-length, 16 hour per week, schedule to be determined in consultation with the supervisor. Position is based out of the Kennebec County Cooperative Extension office in Augusta, Maine.This position pays $18.22 per hour or applicable ACSUM transfer rate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Recruits and supports 4-H Youth and 4-H Volunteers in Kennebec County
Offers research-based youth development information to parents, community, and school partners
Assists with training and ongoing support for 4-H Volunteers
Collaborates with local youth serving organizations to offer 4-H youth development programming
Regularly participates in local Extension staff meetings
Develops and maintains professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, and mutual respect
Builds productive relationships with internal and external constituencies
Utilizes coaching and mentoring methods that provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance
Commits to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve and recommending possible alternatives for a situation
Plans and adapts educational materials for delivery to different audiences
Maintains records, files, and submits regular reports. Adheres to civil rights requirements and tracks and reports civil rights activities as required by federal sponsor
Promotes Extension programs in the community through outreach as well as contributing to newsletters and press releases
Operates computer and audiovisual equipment
Undertake professional development training as negotiated with supervisor
Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Required:
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
Approximately three years of volunteer management or youth teaching experience
Effective written, oral, electronic, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain records, files, reports, teaching aids, and materials
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word or Google Docs
Ability to travel normally requiring a valid driver's license
Formal or informal teaching experience
Classroom or group management skills
Strong organizational and customer service skills
Skills in working well and effectively with a diverse population in a variety of settings
Previous experience working in a team-oriented environment
Demonstrated sound judgment, attention to detail, initiative, and commitment to confidentiality
Ability to provide both office-based and off-site program support
Preferred:
Associates Degree or relevant coursework in education, social work or related fields.
Experience with social media and/or the ability to learn Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.
Prior experience working with volunteer programs and volunteer recruitment.
Training as a 4-H Volunteer
Experience working with diverse audiences; knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion; and understanding of equal opportunity, affirmative action and civil rights policies.
