Responsibilities

A Senior XR Engineer in the Anatomic Modeling Unit is pivotal in inventing, designing, optimizing, and analyzing AR, VR, and MR solutions. The Anatomic Modeling Unit is a centralized hyper-resourced team of radiologists, surgeons, mechanical engineers, biomedical engineers, special effects engineers, and XR Engineers that deliver technological solutions and point-of-care manufacturing to surgical and medical specialties while collaborating with several educational stakeholders throughout the College of Medicine. Using existing infrastructure that creates digital twins and 3D patient-specific models, the XR engineer will seamlessly integrate them into XR platforms for surgical planning, medical education, research, and the development of XR-enabled medical devices. The candidate must be able to work across multidisciplinary teams and have a passion for learning new disciplines while bringing their XR passion and expertise to the team. A core component of the job is the ability to lead XR teams of varied healthcare providers and educators, translating their medical knowledge into robust software solutions that may be deployed in VR, AR, MR, mobile devices, web, and desktops independent of operating systems and every changing XR vendor hardware solutions. The candidate will design experiences, interactions, and applications that support effective collaboration within Immersive environments.

The right candidate has experience and proficiency in programming languages, including Python, C++, C#, and Java, and a firm understanding of leading XR development platforms, including Unity and Unreal Engine. Knowledge of software development methodologies, 3D modeling, computer graphics, optical tracking, and the ability to write clean, readable code and debug problems that span other software development kits is a plus. While familiarity with anatomy, healthcare industry standards, and regulatory requirements are benefits, they are optional to fill this role.

The candidate will serve as a Technical Lead for Division projects and clinical sponsors. Provides technical and work direction to project team members and completes tasks promptly. Mentors and coaches other staff as required. Developing expertise in anatomic modeling unit-specific CAD software, tools, and techniques. Designs and develops architectures of industry-related engineering systems, applying knowledge of complex principles, theories, concepts, tools, and techniques to design challenges. Demonstrate and define immersive interaction standards and develop new processes for visualizing content using immersive technology. Stay current with immersive technology trends. Develop engineering and technical documentation. Develop and maintain sponsor relationships and expand/cross-pollinate uses within new applications. Lead in evaluating new technologies and capital equipment. Demonstrated ability to communicate and present to team members effectively.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with internal and external teams to design and own systems for Medical XR experiences.

  • Develop features, workflows, or tools as needed in collaborations with our departmental teams.

  • Integrate XR into research, education, and clinical shields at Mayo Clinic

  • Design Anatomic Modeling Unit XR business lines working with sponsors from several medical and surgical specialties.

  • Prototyping and coding gameplay/animation/UI features/hardware integrations.

  • Writing clean, maintainable, portable, and well-documented code.

  • Re-engineering of existing code to meet new requirements and implement new technologies.

  • Creation, debugging, maintenance and optimization of custom extensions for Unreal & Unity.

  • Cooperate with designers, engineers, 3D Artists, medical illustrators, animators, surgeons, physicians, radiologists, programmers, and testers to bring suggestions to a needed feature.

  • Ensure stability and performance of the XR applications.

  • Aid in deployment of XR devices and applications to procedural skills and simulation areas.

Qualifications

BS in Engineering or a related field and 5 years of professional engineering experience; Or MS in Engineering or related field and 3 year of professional engineering experience; Or, PhD in Engineering or related field and 1 year of professional engineering experience.

Additional Qualifications

Masters or PhD preferred.

Experience programming and architecting complex, data-driven systems.

Experience programming UI and gameplay systems.

Experience with AR and VR; preferably with some combination of Quest, Pico, HTC, Hololens, Magic Leap, and others.

Experience in end-to-end mobile development and the IoS and Android SDK.

Depending on degree 3-5+ years programming in one or more of C#, C++, Python, using both Unreal and Unity Engines.

Experience in creating XR experiences or other real-time interactive applications with a proven understanding of software development lifecycles.

Proven track record of debugging, performance analysis and optimization in XR development.

Invent, analyze, design, develop and VR, MR, and AR computer vision algorithms in areas related to intraoperative tracking and medical education paradigms.

Familiarity with version control, continuous integration, bug tracking and code review systems.

Experience delivering training/technical talks and writing technical documentation.

Experience programming and architecting complex, data-driven systems.

Experience programming UI and gameplay systems.

Experience with Git Source Control.

Must have excellent object-oriented design and analysis skills.

Strong communicator and fluent in English with excellent verbal and documentation skills.
