The Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) offers a unique blend of recreation and education for both the college community and the public. Encompassing 3,000 acres of working forest, the VIC showcases the college’s deep commitment to environmental stewardship and learning. Containing nearly all ecosystem types found in the region, the VIC provides 25 miles of trails designed for running, hiking, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing. It also features world-class Nordic ski trails and a biathlon range. Nearly 30,000 visitors come to the VIC annually to enjoy programs including hands-on learning, naturalist programs, arts and culture initiatives, and a variety of recreational opportunities. Indoor facilities include an educational exhibit area, classroom, library, art gallery space, and retail store.

Position Description:
Paul Smith’s College is seeking a seasonal Naturalist for its Visitor Interpretive Center. The Naturalist is responsible for leading and supporting interpretive programming focused on the natural history and ecology of the Adirondack region to foster a connection to the natural world with visitors. In addition, the position will assist in developing and evaluating programs and supporting communications with social media and blog posts.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Lead engaging environmental education and interpretation programs, nature hikes, and presentations for diverse audiences, including school groups, families, and the public.
• Provide information on local ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation efforts, answering visitor questions and encouraging responsible outdoor recreation.
• Assist in creating educational materials, interpretive displays, and hands-on activities related to local flora, fauna, and environmental topics.
• Support special events, guided tours, and outreach initiatives to promote environmental awareness and stewardship.
• Provide photographs and stories for social media and blog posts.
• Assist with other duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications and Preferences:

• Background in environmental science, biology, ecology, education, or a related field preferred.
• Passion for nature, conservation, and environmental education.
• Strong public speaking and communication skills.
• Experience working with children and the public in an educational setting is a plus.
• Ability to hike and work outdoors in varying weather conditions on uneven ground.
• Basic knowledge of local flora, fauna, and ecosystems (training may be provided).
• Knowledge of or interest in Adirondack natural history and ecology.
• Ability to work weekends and events.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.
• Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive workplace.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification in at least one of the following or willingness to obtain: First aid/CPR, Wilderness First Aid, or Wilderness First Responder.
