Position: AWI Seasonal Laboratory Technician

Status: Full-time (up to 40 hours), temporary, seasonal, non-exempt, staff

Department: Adirondack Watershed Institute

Reports to: AWI Laboratory Manager

Salary: $19 - $21 per hour

Description:

The Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute is seeking entry-level Laboratory Technicians for the summer of 2025. Positions run from April through October and are scheduled for 40 hours per week. The position is based on Paul Smith’s College campus. The position will serve as an entry-level analyst in the AWI environmental research laboratory and support general laboratory operations.

The Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) is a program of Paul Smith’s College, a private undergraduate college located in the heart of the Adirondack Park in upstate New York. The mission of AWI is to protect clean water, conserve habitat and support the health and well-being of people in the Adirondacks through scientific inquiry, stewardship, and real-world experiences for students.

Duties will include:

• Water sample receipt, preparation, and processing.
• Analysis of surface water samples, including but not limited to: pH, conductivity, chlorophyll-a, color, and color of dissolved organic matter.
• Data entry & management.
• Cleaning sample bottles and analytical glassware.
• General assistance around the lab.

Qualifications:

• College course work in environmental science, chemistry, biology, geology, or other natural sciences.
• Interest in environmental science and desire to gain experience in the laboratory.
• Ability to spend extended amount of time on your feet.
• New York State Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s insurance carrier.
• Ability to perform duties independently and proactively.
• High level of attention to detail.
• Clear and legible penmanship.
• Experience working in a laboratory setting.
• Experience working with Excel.
